“Vision Boards” in the Bible

Yesterday I discovered two things, firstly an example of “Vision Boards” in the Bible and secondly that Vision Boards were made popular by the book ‘The Secret’. Before I realised either of these two things I had already been using visual imprinting for several years and had seen it work in different areas of my life. As such I have a good scientific basis of why and how it works so felt very comfortable using it in the work I do with clients.

For many years mainstream Christianity has shunned the use of vision boards because of its association with the New Thought/Age movement so imagine my surprise to find an example within scripture.

"Vision Boards" in the Bible

Then Jacob took branches of fresh poplar and almond and plane trees, and peeled white stripes in them, exposing the white in the branches. Then he set the branches which he had peeled in front of the flocks in the watering troughs, where the flocks came to drink; and they mated and conceived when they came to drink. So the flocks mated and conceived by the branches, and the flocks gave birth to streaked, speckled, and spotted offspring. Jacob separated the lambs, and [as he had done with the peeled branches] he made the flocks face toward the streaked and all the dark or black in the [new] flock of Laban; and he put his own herds apart by themselves and did not put them [where they could breed] with Laban’s flock. Furthermore, whenever the stronger [animals] of the flocks were breeding, Jacob would place the branches in the sight of the flock in the watering troughs, so that they would mate and conceive among the branches; but when the flock was sickly, he did not put the branches there; so the sicker [animals] were Laban’s and the stronger Jacob’s.Genesis 30: 37-42

I’ve read different commentaries about why this resulted in speckled and spotted sheep from DNA to diet both totally plausible in Western science and therefore acceptable within Christianity. However, I was surprised at how much disbelief there was around the idea that just looking at the rods could have been what had caused the speckled, spotted and brown offspring. I think it’s because we assume that it must be mystical or magical because there doesn’t seem to be a readily available scientific explanation.

I have never read The Secret so I don’t know what it says about Vision Boards but my own understanding of Visual Imprinting is that it works because it generally bypasses our conscious awareness. We are constantly taking in information every day and if we are exposed to the same information long enough and consistently enough then it will become a part of who we are by becoming embedded in our subconscious.

Jacob primed the animals to subconsciously take in the information that he wanted them to manifest by mating them in eye line of the stripped rods, watering them at the trough filled with stripped rods and when they were not doing either of those making them face Laban’s speckled, spotted and brown flock for the rest of the time!  Jacob was always the crafty one and this shows it well.

It seems strange to say that animals have a subconscious, but actually the subconscious mind is our storehouse of information from all our past experiences there is no thinking involved at this level, it is instinctual. In many ways, it mimics long-term memory and contains our learnt ways of being. In fact, a whole new wave of genetic research called Epigenetics has shown that your environment can heavily impact your genes. In other words, what you surround yourself with on a conscious and subconscious level can even influence whether particular gene expressions are switched on or off!

I find this so interesting because this one account from the Bible contains so much: genetics, psychology even hypnotic suggestion but you wouldn’t get that just by reading it. I’ve read the scripture many times before, pondered on its meaning and shrugged my shoulders over it but yesterday was the day that YHWH wanted me to see more deeply into it. Obviously, I’m not a scientist but out of all the explanations I’ve encountered on this, the simplest and most obvious explanation is Visual Imprinting and it seems to fit here.

So what can we learn from this? A number of things. One that, visual imprinting/vision boards are not something to be thrown out just because it was made popular by The Secret. Unfortunately, there are many hidden gems in the Bible that we miss because we have been schooled into accepting one school of thought as good and another as bad leaving no room to practice wisdom or discernment. Think about this, once upon a time, people considered the lightbulb, fire and the radio as witchcraft but today no one thinks twice about it! I believe that YHWH is more than willing to show us these hidden gems but instead we throw away sound Biblical knowledge and wisdom just because another faith or belief system has got to it first, labelled and popularised it.

This is an area that I have been praying about a lot lately because it’s a form of spiritual bondage, thankfully over the years I have been blessed and fortunate enough for God to reveal to me how faith, psychology and science inter-lap within the Bible. I truly believe that God’s Word can be used in practical and applied ways to help us live a more abundant life if we are open to reading past what we think we see.

Let’s talk, have you ever used Vision Boards or Visual Imprinting before? If so, what was your experience of it? Did you feel that it was developed/created by the New Thought movement so never went near it or did that never cross your mind?

  1. So good Florence. I feel the same way. There are so many things Christians fear due to wanting to remain faithful to Christ and to the Bible. When I first got interested in becoming a therapist, my pastor was totally against it due to the secular education I would receive. But when I read verses such as in Philippians 4 that talk about “think[ing] on these things,” I realized that the Bible and psychology were not all that far off. I know what you mean about vision boards though…that people associate that type of thing with New Age…and yet the Apostles “cast lots” to choose someone to replace Judas, something that most Christians would frown upon. I think fear and caution drive a lot of what we do, but if we would open our mind and dig deeper into Scripture we would find many things that we never noticed before.

    • I 100% agree with you Linda, we shouldn’t be led by Fear. Love hath no fear because fear has torment – I see it as being tormenting to us (causing severe physical and mental torture) and this isn’t the state that God has called us into.

Thank you for your very insightful comment x

Love hearing from you
